January 2015 Newsletter
1. EMCC President 2015
Ed Heacock is the new EMCC President, taking over from Bill Doyle. Ed has been a well-known member of the cycling and XC skiing communities since the 1960’s. He spent some time on the Canadian National road team; he was the original organiser of the Klondike Criterium back in the 1980’s, when this was a two or three-day stage race; he has previously been EMCC Secretary, and Velocity CC President; he has been involved with the organisation of the Birkebeiner for quite a few years.
As he said at the January meeting, Ed just wants to do his bit in supporting his community, and our club.
2. Meeting, January 7th, 2015
After further discussion on how best to accommodate new riders, it was decided to schedule a Saturday morning club ride, specifically for new riders. These will be under the supervision of an experienced rider, who will provide instruction on group riding skills and etiquette. Non-members wishing to try out will be eligible for one “free” ride. Details to follow, meanwhile spread the word.
3. Annual Banquet
The annual banquet, awards night and social evening is set for Saturday, January 24th, 2015, at the Executive Royal Inn (same place as last year), 178 Street and 100 Avenue. Reservations ($30 per person) are now available on Karelo:
Door prizes so far include:
– A full 2015 EMCC membership
– A multi-pass to the TrueRide Cycle Studio
– A winter car safety kit and more.
4. Penticton 2015
The Penticton training camp is set for the week of April 19th – 25th. Call the Tiki Shores resort at 1 866 492 8769 to make your reservations at our special rate – be sure to mention Edmonton Masters up-front. Please note that this event is for 2015 EMCC members only, so please renew your membership for 2015 beforehand.
Each day there are three or more groups, including an “easy” group for those who don’t want to ride themselves into the ground. So if you’re a new member, unsure of riding in a group, or just not that fit, there’s always a place for you.
5. 2015 Membership
2015 EMCC membership registration will be up on Karelo soon. First-claim full membership is $100 plus $40 ABA insurance, and includes free entry to all the midweek events. First-claim general membership is $50 plus $40 ABA insurance, but does not include free entry to midweek events – general members will still be able to participate for an entry fee of $5 per event. Second-claim full and general members do not pay the $40 ABA insurance. Members aged 70 and over as of January 1st, 2015 do not pay a membership fee, just the $40 ABA insurance if they are first-claim; entry to midweek events is free for all members aged 70 and over.
