That was the week that was
The first “novices” group ride on Saturday April 11 had two riders who had never ridden in a group before, two other riders taking the opportunity for an easy, relaxed early season ride, and a few experienced members who showed up to make up the group and help make it a meaningful learning experience. The ride was a fairly relaxed 30 km, starting with a single paceline then moving on to a double paceline, and by all accounts was successful in meeting everyone’s objectives. So the “novices” ride scheduled for Saturday May 2nd will go ahead, probably slightly longer but again at a relaxed pace.
When I went into the Safeway gas bar prior to the ride today (Sunday April 12), I was greeted with a cheery “Nice to see the cycling club rides are starting up again.” So I guess no-one showed up the previous Sunday, when it was even colder than it was this morning. We had a good group of nine, and the pace was fairly brisk but steady as we tacked south and east. Not long after turning back north into the ever-increasing wind, Kathy McKay was kind enough to have a flat, which gave us a bit of a rest before facing the rest of the run-in back to Sherwood Park. It got pretty brutal in places, but everyone survived.
